PIRATE movie hero Johnny Depp could soon be swapping his cutlass for a sonic screwdriver - by playing DOCTOR WHO. The Hollywood hunk - best known as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films - last night emerged as a front-runner to play the Time Lord in a big screen version of the BBC's sci-fi hit. Websites claimed Depp, 47, has already been offered the Dalek-battling role. A source said: "Casting Doctor Who is never easy as whoever plays him needs a cool air of mystery but also a slightly bonkers attitude. "Johnny Depp is the perfect choice - exactly the kind of actor who could get inside the Time Lord's brain and do him justice. "And obviously for a Hollywood treatment you need a big box-office star to put bums on seats. "Doctor Who is massive here and has a decent worldwide fan base. But having someone like Johnny would really lift it." The BBC has been keeping its plans for a movie under wraps for years.
But writer Russell T Davies, who revamped the TV show in 2005, is working on a script in Los Angeles, which could be turned into a film in 2012. If Depp lands the part it will be seen by some as a snub to David Tennant, who played the Doctor for three series before handing over to current Time Lord Matt Smith. |
